Not sure if anyone still remembers, but in the summer of '05, Game was buzzin' about this young kid from Phoenix named Juice. Right about the time when he was forming Black Wall Street. So he signed Juice, threw him onto a DJ Skee-hosted tape, and the Black Wall Street Journal Vol.1, and dude was ghost for a few years.
Apparently, he just did a tape with Don Cannon, so I'll have to track that down, but I really haven't heard much about him in the past few years. What motivates me to look for Juice are the solemn bangers he produced in the past few years, this just being one of them.

Just Blaze- Touch The Sky Instrumental
Is there such a thing as an inappropriate use of a Curtis Mayfield sample? Just Blaze doesn't seem to think so. I think most people remember this jawn as our introduction to a young Chicago lyricist named Lupe Fiasco. However, it's also worth remembering that Jus' Bleezy laced one of the illest productions on a Kanye West album. For whatever that's worth.

Guilty Simpson feat. M.E.D.- The Future
I don't even know that I have too much to say about this jawn. It comes off Guilty Simpson's well-received Ode To The Ghetto. In my humble opinion, it is one of only a few joints that survived my first listen to OJ's opus.
Then again, the only reason I knew Guilty Simpson before I heard his album, is because of his status as a weed carrier for the Dilla organization, so having high hopes may have been counter-intuitive. Oh well, at least this jawn knocks something vicious.

Atmosphere- Little Man
As much as I usually don't like Atmosphere, I've found that Slug & Ant have a gems in their discography, and it'd be conceited of me not to share.
This is off You Don't Know How Much Fun We're Having, which is quite possibly one of the most solid Rhymesayers releases in recent memory (not including any of Brother Ali's albums).
Ant comes through with a great instrumental, and Slug holds up on his end, although the sentimentality gets to be a little too much at times.

Heavy D- Feel It In The Air (Instrumental)
A few weeks ago when I was compiling Game disses, I came across a cold gem (Old Gunz) by a Black Wall Street affiliate called Rockstar. The rhyming was on point, but the production was unreal. Especially for a budget-ass mixtape like Ghost Unit, which led me to believe it wasn't original production.
So, I did a little digging and found out it was an instrumental by Heavy D for The B.Coming. I understand you Sigel/ROC stans might be readin' this looking at me sideways, since Feel It In The Air is dude's most well-known record, but I'd never heard it before. In fact, I never even listened to Sigel (outside of features) before this jawn. And for good reason, which is why this post is dedicated to Heavy D's jazzy instrumental.

Common- Invocation
Lately I've been trying real hard to get my mind off life and hip hop is usually the remedy. I first listened to One Day It'll All Make Sense, and as soon as I heard Invocation, I really got lost in the music. For two minutes, I was only about Lonnie Rashid Lynn Jr. and Dion Wilson.
It's funny to me how people assume that No I.D. is an talented up-and-coming producer after they find out he produced Death Of Autotune, when in fact he's been 'Ye's mentor for years. This jawn only affirms No I.D.'s position as a Chi-town production god.

TheMessageBlog.com Presents: The Warriors
The homie Wally $ean has been holding me down on the compilation tip for a few months now, and it's time to shine light on some of the ill compilations and write-up's over at TMB dot com. This is a brand new tape, based on The Warriors (any Wu-Tang swordsman's favorite film), incorporating lots of hardcore '90's joints fo that ass!
Here's the official description, and the back cover + dl link ensue at the bottom.
Inspired by the 1979 film of the same name, the tape is a retrospective of '90s hardcore Hip-Hop. Like the Warriors themselves, hardcore Hip-Hop acts are something of a phenom in today's game, seemingly attacked from all sides by industry big-wigs, bongo drum-slapping backpackers and wack-ass hipsters. So, as they say in the flick, "Warriors, come out and plaaayeeyaaay!"

People Under The Stairs feat. Camel MC- Acid Raindrops
I just recently acquired every last PUTS album known to man. Being a perfectionist, it felt good to finally find all of them, but I've been keeping so busy, that I haven't even got a chance to listen to any of them. Except O.S.T., which I heard a while before I really started fuckin' with the whole underground/alt Cali hip hop movement.
I always liked what I heard from Thes One though, and this jawn is no exception...

O.C-Born 2 Live
When people mention hip hop in 1994, it can be easily summarized by one word: Illmatic. Which is a shame since O.C. dropped a classic album in Word....Life.
Born 2 Live is my favorite jawn simply because of the intricate storytelling aspect. O.C. was on some Slick Rick/Biggie shit when he told stories, and this cut is a prime example.

Cunninlynguists- K.K.K.Y.
I could never understand why the Cunninlynguists didn't make it big. Although they are independent artists on their own label, consider their minor yet vocal resemblance to numerous members of The Dungeon Family, Goodie Mob, and even OutKast.
Obviously their sound is quite a bit different from the aforementioned southern staples, but it's not that different.
The production is certainly there, and the lyricism is more than present. So what the problem is? Especially if they keep producing jawns on the level of K.K.K.Y.

Joe Budden feat. Joell Ortiz- Warfare
Remember when Joe Budden was that mixtape rapper who always came with metaphors that would make you chuckle? Dude was thorough with his sports comparisons, dropping references to Sam Bowie and Hakeem Olajuwon in the same sentence, like it was nothing. Joell Ortiz has always been dope, but Buddens was on another altitude of greatness back during his Mood Muzik days. Padded Room? Not so much..
We'll see what's good with the Slaughterhouse album though. A lot of promise, but a terrible track record for supergroups.

Notorious B.I.G.- What's Beef
It takes a good minute before you can really start listening to this minimalistic instrumental and truly appreciate all that Big Poppa is saying. And the hook/chorus/refrain is the stuff of legends.
What's beef? Beef is when you need two gats to go to sleep. Beef is when I see you, guaranteed to be in ICU.

Juelz Santana and Lil' Wayne- Birds Flyin' High
Is this Dwayne Carter's classic constipation face? Or is it his impersonation of George Jung? One of the main members of the Medellin Cartel, who brought in millions of kilos from Colombia to southern Florida (a la Scarface). On the topic of cocaine transport, you need to see the documentary Cocaine Cowboys. One of the most eye-opening flicks I've ever seen, especially since it's narrated by Jon Roberts, who was right in the middle of it all and had ties with all the big names of the Miami coke cowboys as well as the Colombian suppliers. To him a guy like Pablo Escobar is more than a name. That's harrowing, in my opinion.
As for the jawn, well you can find out...

Killah Priest feat. Tekitah- One Step
This was the first Killah Priest joint I ever heard, and it raised my expectations for the man to an insurmountable level. That said, Heavy Mental is a must-have for any self-respecting Wu stan. It lacks the repetitive production technique of a mere Wu affiliate/weed carrier/drug dilla, and incorporates mind-numbingly deep philosophical theory, while Killa P drones his way into your top 10 list of MC's who could have a doctorate or PHD on the down-low.

Souls of Mischief- '93 Till Infinity
Since I'm already posting blatant classics, what's the harm in one more? Off the album with the same name as the title track comes one of the most magnetizing instrumentals of all time.
Now, the lyricism? Speaking for myself, but I think there are a great number of artists who have remixed this jawn into something greater than the original. Just my take...

Ol' Dirty Bastard- Shimmy Shimmy Ya
I don't really know why I'm posting this when almost everyone already has this jawn. Actually, I do know why.

Ill Bill- American History X
Apologies for the lack of posts today, I smashed into a fire hydrant going 30 mph, totaled my car, and as you can imagine new posts were the last thing on my mind.
And I've been listening to Ill Bill's What's Wrong With Bill in an ill-fated effort to get my mind off it all. Anyway, this is quite possibly one of my favorite Bill jawns ever, and that's partly because the title takes it's name from one of the most eye-opening movies of the '00's.

M-Dot: M.oney D.oesn't O.wn T.hought
M-Dot's self-acronymed mixtape M.oney D.oesn't O.wn T.hought is a tale of two sounds. The first and most prominent is a grimy undercurrent of raw lyricism and dirty instrumentals that overtakes you with their blatant dopeness. The other sound is much more refined with glossy beats and complacent rhymes, designed for commercial appeal. No need to worry as the second sound only plagues a small minority of this tape. The rest is full of Boston-brand East Coast boom bap.
If you're still not convinced, try a few of these on for size:

J Dilla- Gobstopper
I don't really listen to Dilla that often, but when I do it always puts me in a different mindstate. Especially Donuts, Jay Dee must have been taking orders from a higher force when he made that record.
Gobstopper is exactly opposite of it's name, in that it's savory goodness only lasts for one minute. I could listen to that riff loop thousands of times.

Company Flow- Bad Touch Example
This is one of my favorite Company Flow jawns to ever see the light of day (apparently El-P is still hoarding lots of unreleased Co Flow that may never reach the masses). I do realize that announcing a favorite off Funcrusher Plus is the equivalent to choosing a favorite off Illmatic.
One more thing I thought I'd mention. If you're ever amazed at the level of originality and creativity on the instrumental tip from Company Flow, realize that this group consisted of three members. Of those three members all were producers.

Aim- Cold Water Music
I want everyone to channel the Albert Einstein inside your soul, and brace yourself for an "experimental" instrumental. This isn't a purely hip hop beat, it has lots of different elements to it. But the primary element that makes it worth it is it's listening appeal.
Just slip away and let the sounds take you to a different place.

Little Brother- Beautiful Morning
I've given a conscious effort to listen to the whole Little Brother discography, and I've been left rather unimpressed. The Minstrel Show is a decent album, but it's plagued by sporadic production and unmotivated lyricism at times.
But, when 9th loops a soul sample perfectly and Tiggallo and Pooh throw down some genuine heat, it sounds like a Beautiful Morning.

Main Source feat. Shaqueen, Sheek Louch & Jadakiss- Set It Off
This track is notable for numerous reasons. One, it comes from an Main Source album, and everything even loosely affiliated with Large Pro deserves to be documented.
Another reason is that this jawn features a young Jada and Sheek Louch back in '94. These guys were considered rookies back in '98 when they dropped the first LOX album, so they were beyond being unknown 4 years before that.
Lastly, is the Large Pro instrumental which makes this posse cut worthy of your undivided attention.... at least for a few minutes.

Jedi Mind Tricks feat. Planetary- I Against I
Off the one and only worthwhile Jedi Mind album: Violent By Design. I'm exaggerating, kinda. What makes this jawn worthwhile is the monstrosity of a beat by Stoupe. If Stoupe would have came up in the game alongside a different crew, the sky would have been the limit in terms of potential. This instrumental is a 3 minute glimmer at that potential.
By the way, Planetary comes through pretty rugged on the lyrical tip.

El Prez & Dale Danja- Let Go
Admittedly, this is some hipster shit, but it's also a guilty pleasure. The first listen to Perfect Strangers didn't go so well, but after a few additional listens I started to really get into the instrumentals, and when I get into the beats, I eventually start to appreciate the lyrics a little later. El Prez is full of great one line quotables, and Dale Danja is a beast on the instrumental tip...

The Roots- Illadelph Halflife
Where to start with this one?
For those unfortunately inexperienced with The Roots discography, this will be an eye-opener. Sure, the boys from Illadelph have always been known for experimenting in a multitude of different genres. Illadelph Halflife was the one and only album where The Roots captured a vibrant image of Philadelphia hip hop.
The production is superb on this album, not enough can be said about the vast range of emotions each instrumental conveys. But the unsung hero (if there is one), would have to be Black Thought. He delivered on an unprecedented lyrical scale, with eye-opening, skull-shattering verbal dexterity.
There are many reasons why you need this album, a holy recommendation from me should only be one. Cuts and links below:

Gravediggaz: 1-800-Suicide
Every time I hear this song, I'm always reminded of this masterful post by the writing luminary, Maddox. I promise you that it's on some 'twilight zone' shit how much that article and this song have in common.
As for the jawn itself, it's one of the darkest, grimiest shits I've heard this side of Non-Phixion. The Gravediggaz were Jedi Mind when Wu Tang weed carriers were still fashionable.

Afu-Ra feat. Royce Da 5'9- Pusha
This jawn really surprised me the first time I heard it. Mainly because it's Afu-Ra in uncharted territory, rapping alongside an artist with minimal connection to GangStarr. Another is the overpowering instrumental by DJ Roach, which sounds nothing like the typical Primo beats that would adorn an Afu-Ra album.
This is really the point where I started paying attention to Royce Da 5'9. At some point in 2005/2006 he started killing all his guest features, and dude was everywhere.

AZ- The Format
I remember how excited I was about three years back when The Format was just about to come out. I didn't cop it on the release date, more like a week or so after, but I must have listened to that shit consecutively 3 or 4 times. I was convinced that Anthony Cruz was back, that The Format shit on any and every album in his discography not called Doe Or Die.
Three years later, I'm not so sure if I agree with my previous sentiments, but I still listen to the title track on a regular basis.

Deltron 3030- Things You Can Do
Deltron 3030 is probably one of my favorite albums in recent memory. I say this as a huge fanboy of both Dan The Automator and Del Tha Funkee. When I found out they were combining forces to do a full-length album, I did the rap equivalent to wetting my pants. And despite the fact that concept albums don't always have the best track record, 3030 is something special.
From Del's rhymes, Automator's sampling, and Koala's scratching, everything is executed to near perfection.

Mase feat. DMX- Take What's Yours
Despite my intense apathetic hatred towards P Diddy, I managed to give Harlem World a listen way back when. I discovered that overall, it's an awful album, but there are a few hidden gems. One of them being the Hitmen produced Take What's Yours. One of the best Bad Boy instrumentals of all time (and that's with Easy Mo Bee's whole discography acknowledged). And it's magical what happens when you take Ma$e's smooth flow and add some bragadocio rhymes.

J.A.M.E.S. Watts- Two Minute Warm Up Part 1
Since I'm extremely short on time as I write this, I'll be quick (no pause). J.A.M.E.S. Watts is that dude, grown on real hip hop and putting in an serious effort to change the sound of hip hop in the future.
As far as this joint, it's my favorite of his Two Minute Warm Up series, even though it's about a minute long with an interlude at the end. And I'll be honest, the interlude is a large part of what makes this jawn so great.

A Tribe Called Quest- Jazz (We've Got)
Every time I listen to this joint it takes me to a different place, from Q and Phife bullshittin' to the beautiful jazz sample for the chorus. That brings up the little-documented point that Pete Rock produced this jawn, but never really gets credit for it. I mean, why would he? Doesn't this sound like just another instrumental straight out of Ali Shaheed Muhammad's catalog?

Wale- Uptown Roamers
Found this jawn on Hate Is The New Love, a mixtape that marks the beginning of Wale's transformation from go-go savior to a hipster that still produces good music.
This beat is the stuff of legends, drums are so crisp, and the electronic sample in the background works perfectly.
On a really random note, first time I heard Wale I was kind of confused when he talked about 'Merlin and Virginia'. Merlin? The wizard from King Arthur? Nah. I get it now though.

Edo G feat. Masta Ace- Wishing
Off the Edo G/Pete Rock album, My Own Worst Enemy, comes a joint for the dreamer inside all of us. Although it comes off sounding a bit preachy and overly-conscious, Masta Ace delivers a verse that really resonates when you give it a thorough listen.
I've always felt that Edo G's verse is basically a repetition of Ace's, just putting a bit of a different spin on it. On a sidenote, Edo's wish that "BET stopped poisoning youths" is slowly becoming a reality.

One Be Lo- Enecs Eht No Kcab
This particular cut comes off S.O.N.O.G.R.A.M., which is quite possibly one of my favorite releases of the 21st century. One Be Lo has word association that is out of this planet, even phrases that wouldn't make sense in everyday speech like:
"Every time they pass the microphone, you'd think I was a Moss, Viking"
And when he brandishes his smooth flow and thoughtful lyricism over this beast of an instrumental, you'll be left satisfied.

Yung Joc- Play Your Cards
In an attempt to rid myself of my severe Southern bias, I've been listening exclusively to southern albums. Anything from Aquemini to Hustlenomics and a little bit of Z-Ro. So it was to my surprise when I found an ill jawn by Yung Joc.
Real talk, Hustlenomics is a decent album when it comes to nihilistic, brainless bangers. Decent production throughout makes up for Joc's 'lack of lyricism', and every once in a while he'll think of a few witty punchlines and a chorus that consists of "don't get out of line ho" 15 times per verse.

I've known Frederick Lazarus for a good 6 months if not more, and I've been hearing bits and pieces of his music throughout. And while I was setting up IllCuts, Freddy Laz dropped his debut tape called J Dilla Changed My Life. I copped this a good month ago, listened to it, became very impressed, and then forgot about it.
Until today.
This album isn't very good quality, and that's done purposefully to add to the experience. It's not on an unintelligible tip, moreso on a hard-to-decipher tip.
