The Game feat. Jayo Felony-Back 2 Back

This is off one of those Black Wall Street tapes that Game was dropping following his break-up with G-Unit. The tape as a whole is a lot of spiteful poppy shit, which is why it's surprising to hear Jayceon team up with a west-coast veteran like Jayo Felony and body this track on some real shit.

MC Lyte-Kamikaze

It's remarkable how jagged of an edge this jawn has as compared to the rest of Act Like You Know. If any of you guys have ever heard that album, you'd know that it's fairly soft compared to the rest of MC Lyte's discog, but she drops some heavy eff bombs and all sorts of shit (on Kamikaze) that's far from commonplace for the early '90's and especially a female emcee. You wadn't hearing Roxanne Shante with this kind of potty mouth.

Raekwon 'Street Level' Interview

If I remember right, this interview was coming out at the time that Rae was doing all the OB4CL2 publicity. Shit was lost with all the other half-assed interviews conducted at the time. The quality of the questions for this interview spot are top-notch, and shit becomes well ill when DP starts bombarding Raekwon with nostalgia, and the Chef drops some knowledge on that 'back-in-the-day' shit.
If you got the time, check out this interview:

T.I.-Rubber Band Man

This jawn really takes me back to when I just started listening to more and more hip-hop. Back in 03 or 04, when this shit was released, I was pretty sincere in my conviction that T.I. was one of an elite few rappers. I really respected dukes' charisma and the production on his albums was pretty easy to get into. 6 years after the fact, I still like Rubber Band Man, despite the effect it had on southern rap's subject matter.

Heltah Skeltah-Midnight Madness (Audible Doctor Remix)

I'm not sure that I ever heard the OG version of Midnight Madness, but I somehow got my hands on an EP that features 6 remixes of it. If you can find it online, I highly recommend copping it 'cos 3 or 4 of the mixes are quality and well-worth having.
Personally, I like the Audible Doctor remix, brings out the gully in P when he makes off-kilter A Tribe Called Quest references to start off his verse.

Mobb Deep-Peer Pressure (Large Professor Remix)

Hav & Prod coming through with a far lighter sound than the gully mid-90's Mobb Deep sound they perfected. You can partially blame that on Large Pro, but the OG version ain't shit compared to Xtra-P production.

Cormega feat. Royce Da 5'9-Back Against The Wall

Some relatively new heat from 'Mega. This is off a '09 tape (Urban Legend) that features a lot of lesser-known, unreleased shits from Cory. This jawn stands out primarily because of the Statik Selektah (I think) production, but also because of the heat rocks exchanged between Cormega and Royce.
On a sidenote, it'd be interesting to find an official release date for this gem, 'cos this doesn't sound much like Slaughterhouse-era Royce.

Best Of The Murderdog Interviews Part 1

I don't quite recall how I got put on, but I've spent the latter portion of my free-time today reading through the majority of the interviews archived on the Murderdog website. Under the interviews feature you can find an archive of 10+ years of interviews with an wide assortment of artists. I was particularly impressed with the variety of questions and the depth to which most artists answered. However, the scribing is admittedly weak...
Anyway, I'm not about to link to 100+ interviews, so I hope you use the below linked interviews as a steppingstone to the rest of the material provided:

Raekwon
E-40
Big Moe
Mobb Deep
Messy Marv

And the list goes on. I'll do another post with some more of my favorites once I've digested more of the interviews. Those above 5 shits are ill though, that's where I would start...

Lord Finesse-Return Of The Funky Man

An argument can certainly be made that Finesse's finest opus is The Awakening. The production is far more complex and the rhymes have far more substance than Finesse's sophomore effort Return Of The Funky Man. At the same time, sample driven boom-bap production was nothing new for the mid-90's, and battle rapps were getting tired with the quickness. Instead of cashing in on the mafioso styles that were dominating hip-hop at the time, Lord Finesse adhered to his boom-bap, punchline-laden rapps, and probably missed out on props and profit.
With all that in mind, Return Of The Funky Man was a very innovative album for it's time. In early 92, very few people were familiar with Show & AG, Diamond D, L and the rest of the DITC crew that made rare breaks and posse cuts fashionable in the underground. Far from just being innovative, Return Of The Funky Man is one of those records that sounds 10x gullier and more raw just because of the simplistic production and lighthearted rapps.
In the above review, Matty C provides a fairly succinct synopsis of Return Of The Funky Man with: "Finesse never steers too far away from how funky he is, and how people that used to dis him are catching the vapors these days".
