Kanye West- Real People Instrumental

Now, I have strong feelings detesting Kanye West, but the man's music speaks for itself. Well, it used to anyway. Back when he was lacing Common with jazzy instrumentals equipped with samples out of nowhere, 'Ye was on top of the world.
Still to this day this instrumental brings out the best of Kanye West. In the same way that Dilla pioneered his own sound, 'Ye did similarly. He bought a distinct Chicago production to every song he touched, and to tell the truth, I miss it.

Boogie Down Productions- Poetry

Maybe I'm the only one to notice this, but does Kris Parker not have the largest nose known to man kind? I take that back, it's not so much large as it is 'smurf-ish'. In fact, it's gotten better with time. Looking back at old KRS photos from the late 80's and early 90's, his nose was out of control.
As he's aged, it's become less blatant but still easily identifiable. As for the joint, you should already know it by heart.

D-Nice: Crumbs On The Table

Off Call Me D-Nice. Somehow I found out about D-Nice about his work on the internets, specifically the True Hip Hop Story series. So it was a pleasant surprise to familiarize myself with a great emcee that has been active in hip hop far 20 years after his dope debut album.
Did I mention that it's entirely self-produced? And the braggadocio rhymes are still on point, and there's still no better diss than "you're just crumbs on the table".

Brother Ali- Love On Display

If you don't know Soundset is an Rhymesayers sponsored concert held near the Minnesota Metrodome at the beginning of every summer. Just imagine the sheer number of cats associated with Rhymesayers, from well-known indie generals like Slug and El-P to dope up-and-comers like Blue Scholars to ill veterans like Cunninlynguists and One Be Lo to legends like The Pharcyde and Prince Paul. An eccentric and far-covering array of ill MC's and producers. All of them well-respected and dope enough to command their own concert let alone share a stage with other indie artists.
Out of all those cats I named and the numerous ones I didn't, Brother Ali shitted on all of 'em. B Ali polarized and captivated the audience as soon as he stepped on stage rockin' a Joe Mauer jersey. And he ripped/killed shit like no other in Soundset history.
Love On Display is more or less a tale of how Ali has been impacted about hip-hop, and it is introspective and genuine as can be. This is the type of song that can humble the most narcisstic human being. Trust.

Murs- Can It Be (Half A Million Dollars and 18 Months Later)

Some say that Murs sold his soul for riches on Murs For President, due to a commercialized sound and his first release on a major label (Warner Bros). Truth be told, that was how I felt after my first few listens to his album. This is a guy whose name is an acronym stand for 'Making Underground Raw Shit'. Hard to be underground when you're grill is all over MTV, but after another listen I couldn't front, Murs For President is a dope album. Maybe not front to back, and maybe the sound is more refined, but Murs didn't dumb down his lyrics.

Ghetto Philharmonic- Rhythm That We Give 'Em

I know criminally little about Ghetto Philharmonic, which is a shame since Hip-Hop Be-Bop is a criminally ill album that gets slept on like narcolepsy. So to make up for my inadequacies, here is a biography via Last.Fm:

The obscure Ghetto Philharmonic were a jazz-rap duo (G-Clef and Sledge) that unlike other jazz-rap groups of the time (A Tribe Called Quest, Digable Planets, etc.), were actually jazz musicians as well as rappers—G-Clef would constantly switch between rapping and playing his alto-saxophone during their songs, while Sledge would do the same with his trumpet. DJ Spinbad also worked the turntables and beats during their songs.

Kool G Rap- Blowin' Up In The World

The Kool Genius of Rap comes correct on this classic Buckwild production off 4,5,6. Honestly, this is a pretty complacent lyrical performance on Kugee's part (in comparison to the rest of the album), but his flow and ability to piece together a great story more than makes up for it.
Kool G is to the East Coast what Scarface is to the South.

Jazz Liberatorz- Loop Prisoner

A very upbeat jazzy Jazz Lib instrumental off Force Be With You. One thing I've noticed about the promising producers of today and tomorrow is that the days of a sole producer have gone the way of the 8-track. Groups like Cookin' Soul, Cool & Dre, Jazz Liberatorz, and Crust & Grimes are just a few of the examples.
Personally, I've always felt that producing was a very solo type thing, but what do I know?

Cookin Soul- Big L (MVP) remix

Every time I listen to Lifestylez Ov Da Poor and Dangerous it always seems like something's missing. And that something is clearly the production. How can that be though if Showbiz, Lord Finesse and Buckwild produced most of the album? Still a mystery...
So Cookin' Soul (a trio from Spain, well-known for their remixes) put together this remix/blend of the instrumental from Common's A Penny For Your Thoughts and Big L's acapella from MVP.

Of all the major releases (TI, Em, Luda, etc..) throughout 08-09, Game's L.A.X. has no competition. The pure consistency and tenacity on what was supposed to be his last album made it a gem for future generations.
Especially when he was dropping heat like Money. Not the hottest Cool&Dre beat that Game ever spit over (that probably goes to Big Dreams), but the braggadocio rhymes and the Pablo Escobar reference make this well worth remembering.

It's hard to really pinpoint all that's dope about Mac Lethal. Even as someone who heavily fucks with his music I couldn't begin to tell you about Mac's appeal.

Off Alchemist's solo ditty 1st Infantry, this was among a handful of joints that survived my weary delete button. Ras Kass- Soul On Ice

RasKass_SoulOnIce

It’s a shame that this album is only known for the religious controversy that accompanied it, rather than the rhymes that were well ahead of their time (still are). A quick glance at Ras Kass’ discography is all the proof needed to show that dude dumbed down his lyrics as time went on. It’s not entirely fair to say that Rassy just started fuckin’ with Dre and lost his credibility on the spot, because he had a guest spot from Coolio on the largely underground Soul On Ice, and Coolio in the late 90’s was a celebrity of the same caliber as Dre.

What’s truly amazing about this album is the production. Although, the production of this album has it’s critics, you would be a fool to be among them. Ras Kass enlisted a few no-name producers to handle the production, and resulted with some of the illest production of the 90’s. And trust, when I say no-name’s, I don’t mean semi-legendary West Coast producers. I mean the likes of Vooodu, Bird, Michael Barber, Michael Schlesinger and Reno Delajuan. The only semi-recognizable name is DJ Battlecat who is heavy on the West Coast.

The instrumentals are one thing, but the lyrics are another thing onto themselves. Ras Kass digged deep into his soul to deliver some of these songs. And this belongs in the tapedeck of any true hip hop head for the simple reason that you will never find a similar or even comparable album in the hip hop genre. No other rapper has ever explored race, history, or religion as intimately as Ras Kass does on this album. For that reason alone, this album is worthy of inclusion in your digital collection.

One of various reasons why I fucks with De La Soul so heavily is their tendency to work with talented jazz musicians. On a far different tip than The Roots. Whereas The Roots rightfully call their forrays into alternate genres “experimentation”, Prince Paul knows the place for any and every joint.
