Coming from a boom-bap head, it must sound strange to hear Thug Motivation 101 mentioned on a bucket list of hip hop albums every head should listen to at least once in their lifetime, but that's how heavy I fucks with Jeezy's 'debut' (not including his Lil' J shit).
What's great about this album is the sheer number of platonic bangers. The two albums that followed this one lacked the charisma of Thug Motivation 101, he went from Jeezy Da Snowman to Jeezy DeNiro & Snowman Pacino. Whereas Jeezy's other efforts have yielded loads of filler, Thug Motivation 101 was the one album where he consistently flowed over ill beats with his coka-rap flow. The production for this album is the most unheralded aspect, as the entire album sounds good cover-to-cover. We all know that Jeezy isn't one of those rappers that can hop onto a bad instrumental and hold it down with lyrics adlibs alone. That's why the wide range of production truly makes this a gem.
That's not to say that Jeezy doesn't come correct when he's on the mic. This was his breakout album which established his presence as a punchline king. But it also established a precedent of dope hip hop that Jeezy still has not answered up to...
