Right after the immaculate-ness that is N.Y. State Of Mind, comes the best song off Illmatic. For those that don’t have the Bible of this ‘ere culture memorized track-by-track, that song is Life’s A Bitch. L.E.S. takes Black Frost by Grover Washington Jr. and Yearning For Your Love by The Gap Band, and creates one of hip-hop’s timeless instrumentals. Nas comes through with some of his most introspective lyrics to date. Nas’ father Olu Dara comes in at the end and kills it on the cornet. But everyone remembers AZ’s lone verse. No matter how bad Nas bloodied that track, his performance doesn’t compare to AZ’s. His first time on wax and AZ delivered one of the most inhuman verses in all hip-hop history.
As such this compilation acknowledges the birth of a legend, and chronicles his best throughout his 14 years in the game.
