Asheru & Blue Black- Mid Atlantic

Long before the tight-jean wearing inhabitants of the DMV, there was the Unspoken heard, a collective of Asheru and Blue Black. These guys were really putting down quality hip hop before Kenn Starr, Kev Brown, and the countless other dope members of Low Budget.
It's easy to compare the Unspoken Heard to Slum Village and A Tribe Called Quest, but there's something far more behind the exterior. The way Asheru and Blue Black repeat the phrase "Mid-Atlantic" after a few bars reminds me of a similar technique employed by Slum Vill numerous times on Fantastic Vol.2. And the jazzy refrains sound like they could have been excavated somewhere from deep inside Ali Shaheed Muhammad's vaults. If you're into ATCQ and Slum Village, you'll love this shit. Even if you don't really dig the Native Tongue sound, give this one a try. Have I steered you wrong before?

  1. Asheru was a panelist at a forum that discussed hip hop's rites of passage. Read it at http://alanwking.wordpress.com/2009/09/18/forum-discusses-hip-hops-rites-of-passage/
